According to the "Lost Experience", the Others are test subjects for a serum being used by the Hanso Foundation to increase strength and life-span. The "sickness" was the lie told to them. This would explain why Ethan was able to pick up Jack with one hand. It would also make the Others almost 60-70 years old without showing it, (hence the x-ray of the 27 yr old woman with the 70 yr old uterus).
